Sodium butyrate (NaBu) is the sodium salt of butyric acid, a short chain fatty acid (SCFAs: Short Chan Fatty Acids: butyric, acetic, propionic and valeric acid) composed of four carbon atoms.
Butyric acid is a natural byproduct of the fermentation of dietary fiber in the large intestine; it is the main source of energy for mucosal cells; stimulates their turnover and physiological maturation and plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of the mucosa and in the repair processes of intestinal lesions; stimulates the reabsorption of water and sodium in the colon; it contributes to lowering the intestinal pH, creating an unfavorable environment for the development of pathogenic bacteria.
The correct quantity of butyric acid is therefore necessary for the metabolic health of the colon mucosa and more generally of the entire organism.
